THROWBACK TUESDAY

HALL OF FAMERS

The great Jessie Schnepp and the great Jenise Everett joined the ranks of the East Longmeadow Hall of Fame this weekend,

While Jessie might have been the best Volleyball player ever, she also was a fabulous basketball star.  "PRIMETIME" qualified for the All-States in no less than five events: Long Jump, 100 Dash, Triple Jump and had set the school record in the Javelin.

She overcame a severe injury her Senior year which took her out of the jumps and limited her sprints to take up the javelin. In her second meet, she destroyed the school record

Jenise was one of the most outstanding jumpers and sprinters ever. She did play Soccer and originally Basketball, but after careful consultation (an arm twisting by Coach Budd), she switched to Indoor Track and Field and excelled in the Long Jump, 4 x 200 relay, and the 55 Dash.  Outdoors she won the long jump, 4 x 100 relay and 100.

MOUNT EVERETT was told that she would become the best leaper in the history of the school, and she did not disappoint. She broke (and still holds) the Western Mass record in the Triple Jump by taking the title from the best athlete of the 20th century and fellow EL Hall of Famer, Devonia Long.

These are two of the best ever...Schnepp went to UNH and Everett Morgan State, where they continued their careers!

MASSLIVE UNSUNG HERO NOMINEE

Alisha joined our Cross Country team for the first time ever as a Senior. She has been an All-Western Mass.discus thrower;A little unusual nomination from an XC team.

She tried out for Volleyball, but was unable to make the Varsity team and as a Senior, our school generally does not let Seniors participate as a member of JV. So she was let go. Because of her experiences with her Track and Field teammates, she decided to help out the Girls XC team as a manager.

We actually got a "two for one"!

What folks do not know about her is that she is an accomplished weight lifter - a skill that Volleyball usually does not center around.

She offered her weight training experience and skills to our team in addition to managing our meets and practices.

Our girls have improved their performances both in the weight room as well as on the cross country courses - to the point where we secured the best record any cross country team has ever produced at ELHS.

Confidence among our runners as well as alternate weight training disciplines were learned.I attribute a great deal of this towards our gaining an athlete with considerable knowledge lifting who is willing to work both individually and collectively with the team.

Another thing about Alisha is that she has been able to help us while her Mom is taking chemo in Boston for cancer. So she's going back and forth while still maintaining her dedication to our team.

Her presence is immeasurable.

We won our second league title in school history and she had a big part in our achievement.

I NEED SOME HELP

The MSTCA has decided to put Coach Budd into the Hall of Fame.

He needs some folks to send him a 10-15 second blurb about him for the induction ceremony. I don't care for these sort of things, but if I am going to do it, it should be acceptable to my standards.

Can anyone send me a 10-15 second blurb to use? I might not use it, but it could actually help make the production better.

You could send it to my e-mail.  I need it ASAP

Thanks.

WESTERN MASS HEPTATHLON DAY 1 & 2: MUST READ

Bus leaves at 2:00 to Northampton High School.

Meet starts at 3:30.

Apparently the timer will not arrive until 4:30.

SO: High jump and Shot put shall be first. I would like to do high first and then go to shot which is on the other side of the facility, unless Coach Carr can be there earlier.

High Jump plan: do warm-up drills. Get our marks. REMEMBER to keep your behind OUT of the tub.

You get 6 attempts total ( but I hear they shall give you 3 attempts at your last height).

It they go to hurdles, then you can hurdle and throw shot afterwards. Heats are random in the running events.

Do hurdle drills with Coach Gorman

Final event is the 200 meter dash. use blocks if you know how.

First 40 meters GET OUT THERE!

From 40 meters to the passing zone's first triangle...work the turn.

From the first triangle to the finish line..GET TALL and PUSH!

Lean at the finish line the way I have taught you.

DAY 2 (Tuesday): BRITTANY HRDLICKA can help us with the javelin. I shall bring turbos so we can work on crossovers and penultimates on Monday.

I shall be at the Long Jump to help with marks, but WE ALL must help one another with marks!

Emily Baker should have ALL of your distances.

800 meters.

My suggestion is that you run the first 200 easy and try to run the 2nd 200 just a wee bit harder...THEN

try to pick up the pace a bit and FINISH STRONG.

Here is an example of a 3:00 minute 800

1:32 400 followed by a 1:28 400 (:46, :46, :44, :44)

Each event has a point value based upon performance.

Here is a link to scoring:

Here is a link that converts feet to metric ( for field events)

Play round with this if you are setting goals for yourself.

WHITE TEAM: Afonso, Fox, Jarzabski

GREY TEAM: Voight, Baker, Rushford

WEAR SPARTAN INVITATIONAL SHIRTS AS WELL
