CONTESTS

Our handbook covers our expectation of how our team should conduct themselves, especially when on the road.

Mr. Magee has sent me some expectations the school would like followed while we are at other sporting events involving the school.  They are similar. We represent the community as well as the school.

Since you all have passes to games, I encourage you to attend and cheer on your friends and classmates in a positive manner.

I ALSO encourage you to ask your friends to attend our home Cross Country meets and cheer on both the Boys and Girls teams. We are also wearing the school colors as they are!

They don't necessarily have to understand our sport, but they can help encourage us ( after all, I hear a whistle in field hockey and I have no idea what happened...but it does not prevent me from positively cheering for our school).

Have fun at these games as they are part of your overall high school experiences.

WHILE YOU ARE AT IT...recruit folks for INDOOR AND OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD!

BOSTON UNIVERSITY CLINICS

There are a few one day Track and Field camps being held at Boston University this Fall.

They are designed especially for long jumpers, high jumpers, shot putters and discus throwers.

If you are interested, try to find someone else in your respective group and go!

The dates are 9/10 ( which is this weekend) 10/7 and 11/4 ( right before Indoor season starts).

I encourage all of you involved in those events to attend if you can. The prices go down if you have more folks in your event.

New Vaulter Introductory Session

5:00-6:00 Sunday July 30th

Weston HS (Weston, MA)

Apologies for short notice - there will be more of these if you can't make this one.

What: Introduction to PV.

When: This Sunday, 5pm-whenever (more below)

Where: Weston High School track.

Please let Coach Nathaniel "Than" Bogan know if you'll be attending. We should be able to accommodate all interested.

This will be a one hour session to learn safety and vaulting basics. All participants are also welcome to join some or all of the 6pm-8pm regular practice session immediately after. The entire first day is free.

What do I need to bring?

Can parents watch?

Absolutely. Better yet, join in and learn how to vault!

Who is the instructor?

Coach Than sez: "I'll be leading this one. I learned how to pole vault at age 46 -- at a PPV clinic just like this one! -- and at 50 became a Masters All-American. In addition to my PPV affiliation, I coach high jump and pole vault at Natick High School."

What are the age limits?

There is no formal age limit -- young and old can learn to pole vault!

However, it does require staying focused and following instructions for a full hour. Some kids younger than 12 may not be able to do this, so use your judgement. For those on the older end: Stretch, warm up, and listen to your body. We have plenty of older vaulters in our club, and welcome "new old" vaulters!

What's next?

After completing an introduction session, an athlete can join any Patriot Pole Vault practice at any of our sites. (The first day is unique because so much of it is away from the runway, but thereafter beginning vaulters can share the line with state champions!)

For those who wish to continue, you'll need to join USATF and fill out Patriot Pole Vault online forms. (That is not required for the intro session.)

If you have any questions please don't hesitate

to contact Coach Than :-)

DISTANCE.VAULT & BLOOMFIELD THROWS

This morning I saw someone running on our track (around 6:00am). She was really really good.

Repeat 1000's ( marathon runner, she happened to know Mr. Gerry).

Runs for some Green Mountain (?) team out of Vermont.

If you distance folks get a chance to get to the school that early in the AM, you should meet with her.

COACH HAKANSAN-STACY of Central would like to have distance folks contact her. Perhaps you can train with their new start runner. (413)  313- 3005. Coach Arnold as well as our intern Coach Bonnano is interested in running with our girls as well this Summer. I think Audrey has her contact information.

Start getting going soon as the Summer flies by quite quickly. Be cautious of the heat and right now watch out for floods in certain areas.

THROWS

COACH COUNTRY got back to me regarding throwing this Summer either down at Bloomfield of up at EL. Throwers should make a point to try and meet with him. Alisha has seen the results he can produce.

Here is the schedule he has given me, as well as his contact information: (860) 221-4462.

This week: MONDAY6-8:30,TUESDAY 12-2 & 6-8:30, WEDNESDAY 12-2, THURSDAY 12-2 and THIS SUNDAY 12-2.

JULY 24th: MON 6-8:30, TUE 12-2/6-8:30, WED 12-2.

VAULT

Coach Weber continues his series at Minnechaug. In fact there is a meet on 7/22 there for all events this Summer. I shall forward you all the details in a day or so.

FRESHMAN/SOPHOMORE MEET

For the Freshman/Sophomore Meet, I am entering as many of you as possible in the 100 meter dash.

The qualifying stamdard is 14.5. I do not believe many of you have achieved this goal, but I shall try my best in 2 days to get you to run as close to it (or better) as possible.

This also goes for some of our javelin people.

I want you all to compete, but I do not wish to embarrass anyone in the process.

If you achieve a level below the standard, it is MY fault and not yours. it also shall go a long way towards determining what event or events you are better suited for.

Track and Field is a process. VERY FEW folks start out as stars especially their first year, but we have had many folks achieve higher levels after getting a season or two under their belt.

RULE #1 in the handbook is "Give your absolute best each and every day"

RULE #@ in the handbook is "FIRST LEARN RULE #1!

JANUARY 14 MEETS

Here are he pros and cons for Saturday:

PROVIDENCE provides us an alternate location to run.

My daughter lives out there and might possibly come to watch us.

Meet offers 55 hurdles, 55 dash, 200 dash, 400 dash, 800 run, mile, 2 mile, 4 x 2, 4 x 4, 4 x 8 on track

Meet offers pole vault (7' start), long jump, high jump( 4'4" start) weight throw, shot put.

Providence meet, I cannot determine how long it will be, nor how long it will take to get there, we have a meet on Sunday following against Northampton and Putnam, and we might be short handed on Sunday.

I cannot determine how we shall be able to fund the meet ahead of time and might need to have everyone chip in or have boosters cover the cost. ($15 per athlete, $20 per relay). The school would eventually cover the costs, but it might be a challenge to get payment into Providence on time.

These are not events we have for the State qualifying in the sprints.

BOSTON meet has events that we can use going forward.

Saturday it offers the Hurdles (trials and finals) 1000, 600,300, 4 x 800, 4 x 200, 4 x 400.

300 is run in lanes like it would in the MIAA tournament.

In the field Girls shot put, an long jump, as well as high jump starting at 4' 9".

While we have no one that has actually reached that height yet, it does give our best jumper an opportunity to see what it shall be like at the State Sectionals where they shall start at either 4-9 or 4-11.

Funding for the event is easy as, Mr. Magee has already committed to the MSTCA...from an administration standpoint it really is simple and we won't have to be concerned about how we get in.

Boys will not long jump nor throw shot, but can on Sunday at our dual meet. Girls have a lot of throwers anyway.

55 dash is NOT available until Sunday, but we have a commitment to the league on Sunday. Many of you can try out the 300.

Mile and two mile are being held on Friday (along with pole vault, and triple jump).

We shall limit the number of events we go into on Saturday so that we can be at near full strength on Sunday. Rest is going to factor in as well. Fortunately, we have the afternoon meet on Sunday. I would plan on having limited practices during the following week, so you all can get caught up on things.

Do not feel inappropriate bringing your school work to the meet(s), as there shall be some down time. We have had folks do this in the past with great success. It's called multi-tasking.

GOING TO NEED FOLKS TO SIGN UP FOR EVENTS TODAY AND TOMORROW, as entries are due very soon.

Securing a bus either way is not an issue.

MSTCA CLINIC VIDEO

Here are some of the highlights of this weekend's clinic.

ALL of those that attended are expected to share some of the things they might have learned there on Monday!

SO PRACTICE some of those things today, so you can do "show and tell" tomorrow!

It WAS recommended that EVERYONE that attended wear RED, so we could find you easier. Evidently not EVERYONE read the memo! A FEW did wear their SPARTAN INVITATIONAL SHIRTS, so I guess this year we will go with RED rather than gray....
