I wanted to wait until I had adequate time to absorb all that happened Friday before I spoke either way about our performances.
I was also VERY TIRED on Friday, and took Saturday to rest and to give you all some time to spend with friends and family...I just wanted SLEEP!
I had previously stated that if we came within the top 5, I would be pleased. Well, we finished 6th, but for THIS team this is our first real foray into a meaningful championship with really great competition. You ALL have served the team as well as the school and community well.
What I SAW was an ENTIRE team cheering on their teammates at EVRY TURN. From the lineup at the long jump runway to the relays at the end.
There was NO LET UP in enthusiasm! I have never had a team with such spirit, and motivation as this one!
I won't reveal the winner of the Rhea Foster Team Spirit Award, but there were no less than NINE names nominated (that is the ONLY spoiler alert you will get from ME). I KNOW why the names selected were chosen and I THINK there are a WHOLE LOT MORE that could have been.
The spirit of Track and Field is indeed an individual thing, but THIS SQUAD has put the emphasis on team and may have even EXCEEDED some of the traditions that I have been a part of for the past 23 years here.
You ALL make our teachers proud and our administration proud, you make all of your parents proud, our coaching staff, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, you ALL MAKE ME PROUD!
I have told every and anyone that would listen to me (and I can be LOUD as you know), that this season has been a terrific experience.
We have wonderful leaders and folks that are not officially leaders taking the helm when necessary.
I have to really think when I try to figure out a team that has worked so well together.
NOT OVER YET!
Practice Monday regardless of weather. Inside if we must be, but a discussion on the post season for ALL!
Heptathlon is June 6 and 7. This team deserves to go. State Sectional on Thursday and Saturday. I have entered all that I think should make it.
I know there may be a few changes, but we won't lose our momentum!
My high school coach always had an expression when he was especially pleased. I have not used it since 2003, but I think it's appropriate now(don't ask me what it means because it is similar to the "Horse being blind and loading up the wagon"):
HI-GO!
